This year, the 12th anniversary of Etum Academy (led by Director Katherine Park), the students’ dramatic improvement is building even better reputation among parents. From the beginning of the semester, one could already realize the popularity not only in nearby Fullerton area, but also in areas like Irvine, Cerritos, and Diamond Bar.
Parents explain that the first reason to seek programs at Etum Academy is the students’ grade improvement. For example, last year, all students who enrolled in Etum SAT Prep class showed a 300-700 score improvement, and all students in the Troy and Sunny Hills IB Prep class passed the tests. Another advantage of seeking Etum is their competent teachers that cannot be found anywhere else in the private tutoring centers. In all classes, Etum only has top university graduate teachers that are either currently working at a school or have a Ph.D. degree, and most of them have been working at Etum for more than 5 years. These teachers maximize the learning effect by grasping the strengths and weaknesses of each student.
Also, Etum Academy has developed one-to-one management system for all students, in accordance with Director Katherine Park’s educational mission to be “sincere and responsible for the students, thinking each student is my own child.” When each class is over, Director Park discusses with the instructor about each of his or her students every day, and if there is any small problem, she shares and resolves with the parents immediately.
Director Park manages about 300 students daily, and anyone who takes a look at her student files will be amazed. In addition to the students’ learning progress, achievements, and improvements of the day, the student files even include details such as their conditions and little problems. Parents' complaints that they do not know what their child is learning at school or which part they would need to focus more at home can never be an issue at Etum Academy.
Director Park's enthusiasm for education and detail-oriented nature has already led her daughters to attend Yale and UCLA, and now she is sharing her know-how for the students at Etum.
Director Katherine Park mentions, "Although Etum has the best programs, there is one thing that students need to do in cooperation with us in order to
maximize their potential. As long as they finish their homework in accordance with the guidelines, I am confident that all students can improve and succeed.” Moreover, Director Park emphasizes that the parents should continue paying attention to their child after they send them to Etum, since students, teachers, and parents need to cooperate in order to achieve the highest result in education. Etum Academy stands out for its learning environment, not only because it is located inside the Fullerton School District Education Center, but also because its carefully maintained interior fully demonstrates the delicate touch of Director Katherine Park, who is doing her best to keep the academy beautiful and clean for students to help them concentrate only on studying.
With more than 20 years of experience, Director Katherine Park is an expert in education field who advises students in all aspects, not only to improve their grades and provide education for them, but to guide them with issues for peer relations, study habits, and student life. 올해로 개원 12주년을 맞는 플러튼 Etum Academy (으뜸 아카데미, 원장 캐더린 박)가 학생들의 놀라운 성적 향상으로 학부모들 사이에 열풍을 일으키고있다.학기 초부터 계속해서 가까운 플러튼 지역뿐 아니라 멀리 Irvine, Cerritos, Diamond Bar 지역 등에서도 입소문을 듣고 찾아오는 학부모들의 발길이 이어지고 있는 가운데 과연 으뜸의 명성을 실감할수있다.
학부모들이 으뜸을 찾는 첫번때 이유는 학생들의 성적향상이라고 학원측은 설명한다. 일례로 작년 으뜸 SAT 클래스 등록 학생들의 경우 전원이 300-700점이 오르는 성적향상 결과를 보였으며 지난 해 트로이, 써니힐스 IB 준비반의경우 수강생 전원이 IB 프로그램 합격이라는 놀라운 결과를 보였다. 두번째로는 보습학원 어디에도 찾아볼 수 없는 막강한 강사진이다. 전 클래스에 걸쳐 최소 현직교사, Ph.D. 등 명문대 출신의 강사들이 포진하고 있으며 대부분 5년 이상 으뜸에서 근무한 최강 멤버들로, 학생 개개인의 장단점을 완벽하게 파악하여 학습효과를 극대화하고 있다.
또한 으뜸 아카데미만의 자랑은 “우리 아이처럼 끝까지 책임진다”는 사명감을 가지고 운영하는 캐더린 박 원장의 1:1 관리시스템이다. 박 원장은 매일 클래스가 끝나면 담당 강사와 함께 해당 학생에 대히 이야기를 나누고 조그만 문제라도 발견되면 즉시 학부모님과 연락해서 협력해야 할 사항을 나눈다.
박 원장이 매일 직접 관리하는 무려 300명에 달하는 학생들 하나하나의 기록부를 보면 탄복할 정도다. 해당 강사와의 미팅을 통해 알게된 학습진도, 성취도, 성적 향상도는 물론, 그날 그날 아이의 컨디션이나 문제점까지 상세하게 기록되어 있다. 아이가 학원에서 뭘 배우고 있는지, 집에서는 어떤 부분을 신경써서 아이를 도와야 하는 건지 모르겠다는 학부모님들의 푸념은 으뜸에서는 절대 들을수없다.
박 원장의 교육에 대한 남다른 열정과 철저한 성품은 이미 두 딸을 예일대와 UCLA 에 진학시켰으며, 이제 그 경험과 노하우를 으뜸 아카데미 학생들에게 고스란히 쏟아붓고 있는 것이다. 캐더린 박 원장은 “으뜸의 교육이 아무리 좋아도 학생이 최소한 해줘야 할것이 있다”며 학원 측에서 주는 숙제만 해온다면 어떤 학생이라도 자신있다고 힘주어 말한다. 또한 박 원장은 교육은 학생과 선생님과 학부모와의 삼박자가 잘 이루어질때 최대의 실력향상을 기대할수 있으므로 학원에 보낸 후에도 학부모님의 계속적인 관심히 필요하다고 강조한다. 플러튼 스쿨 디스트릭 교육센터 안에 위치해 있는 으뜸 아카데미는, 주변 환경에서도 단연 돋보인다. 학원에 들어서는 순간, 아름답고 깔끔한 학원내의 분위기는 학생들이 공부에만 전념할수 있도록 최선을 다하는 캐더린 박 원장의 섬세한 손길을 엿볼수있다.

Letter from Yale
As time goes by, I realize even more that it was a great blessing in my life that I met Etum Academy during my junior high and high school years.
My mother always encouraged me to read books, so in my childhood, I used to pick only some of my favorite books and read them half-heartedly. However, Etum Book Club helped me experience and learn more than I could ever imagine in one book.
Through the well-organized curriculum and various activities of Etum Book Club, I learned lessons that I would never have acquired if I had not studied at Etum. My English skills that I have been building through going to Book Club in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades came into effect when I was in Etum SAT Class during high school. All the vocabulary I naturally learned through the Etum Book Club appeared on the SAT test.
I also got a high score in SAT Reading and Writing because my critical thinking skills were already trained through Book Club. In Etum SAT Class, I learned a lot through thoughtful lectures that did not simply focus on solving problems. The teachers were well-prepared, had love and passion for the students, and had a perfect student management system. It was different from any other SAT schools I have heard about.
Director Katherine always has a positive mind, and the atmosphere of the academy has given me the confidence to look at the world positively, and I came to realize that, if I always prepare diligently and thoroughly for class assignments and exams, even if it is a small quiz, I could maintain a high GPA, and that the GPA is a result of taking my position as a student with seriousness and responsibility. Director Katherine has always emphasized that responsibility is the key to succeed in college, and even in my future career. So after I came to Yale, I was able to continue having A’s in classes, receive scholarships, and become a proud daughter for my parents. Now I have to write several essays in a week, but since I had practiced writing in Etum Book Club and SAT Class so many times, I often receive compliments from my professors about my creative writing skills. I also feel confident in discussion sections because of countless experiences of reading, discussing, and presenting about books of diverse genres at Etum Book Club.
Everything seems like a dream. I have always been shy and passive, but I ended up studying with confidence and receive scholarships here at Yale. I came to realize even more all the positive effects of attending classes at Etum Academy – an experience comparable to encountering a classical masterpiece, as its value is appreciated more as time goes by. At first, I was thinking about going to a different SAT school with my friends, but my mother’s judgment about sending me to Etum Academy made significant changes in my life, and I appreciate her wise decision. I have been studying diligently this year with confidence in my future, and I am grateful for the time I spent at Etum Academy during my junior high and high school years. I will never forget the help of Etum Academy, and I would like to do my best for my future success and repay my parents and Director Katherine for their love and effort.
시간이 지나면서 저는 더욱 깨닫게 됩니다. 제가 Jr. High와 High School 시절에 Etum Academy를 만난 것이 제 인생의 큰 축복이었다는 사실을… 책읽기의 중요성을 잘 아시는 엄마가 언제나 책읽기를 강조하셔서 마지못해 무작정 제가 좋아하는 책만 골라 읽던 저에게 Etum Book Club은 단 한권의 책을 통해서도 제가 상상 할 수 없을 만큼 많은 것을 경험하고 알게 하였습니다. Etum Book Club의 잘 짜여진 커리큘럼과 다양한 Activity를 통하여 저는 Etum에서 공부하지 않았다면 결코 알 수 없는 것들을 배우게 되었고, 6, 7, 8학년 동안 Book Club에 다니면서 탄탄히 다져진 저의 영어 실력은 High School 때 다니던 Etum SAT Class에서 한층 그 빛이 발하기 시작하였습니다.
Etum Book Club을 통해 자연스럽게 익혔던 Vocabulary가 SAT에 모조리 나올 줄이야… 이미 Book Club을 통해 훈련되었던 저의 Critical Thinking 실력 덕분에 SAT Reading과 Writing에서도 높은 점수를 받았음은 말할 필요 조차 없었습니다. Etum SAT Class에서는 문제풀이식의 수업이 아닌, 깊이있는 강의를 통해 많은 것들을 배우게 되었고, 선생님들의 철저한 수업준비와 학생들에 대한 사랑과 열정, 그리고 완벽한 학생관리, 모두가 제가 지금까지 들어왔던 SAT학원과는 차원이 달랐습니다.
언제나 긍정적인 마음으로 가득찬 Katherine원장님과 학원 분위기는 자신감과 함께 긍정적으로 세상을 바라보는 눈을 가지게 해줬고, Homework과 시험을 중요하게 생각하고 어떤 시험이든지 그것이 비록 Quiz일지라도 철저히 준비하면 반드시 좋은 GPA를 낼 수 있고, 그것은 학생으로서 가져야 할 책임감이며, 그 책임감은 앞으로 대학이나 사회에 나가서도 반드시 성공할 수 있는 좋은 습관이 됨을 항상 강조하셨던 Katherine원장님 덕분에 저는 High School 내내 높은 GPA를 유지하였고 이 곳 Yale에 와서도 줄곧 A를 받아 장학금까지 받고, 부모님께도 효도하는 딸이 되었습니다. 그리고 일주일에도 많은 양의 Writing을 써서 제출 해야하는 저에게 Etum Book Club과 SAT Class에서 다져진 영어 실력 덕분에 다른 학생들보다 더 감동적이고 창의적인 Writing을 써서 교수님들에게도 칭찬을 받고 있으며, Etum Book Club에서 다양한 종류의 책을 읽고 토론하고 발표하는데 익숙해진 나는 대학교에서도 어떤 깊이 있는 주제에도 자신있게 토론에 임하고 있습니다.
생각해보면 모두가 꿈만 같습니다. 언제나 수줍음이 많고 소극적인 제가 많은 수재들이 모여 있다는 이 곳 Yale에서 이렇게 장학금까지 받아가며 자신있게 공부할 수 있다니.. 시간이 지나가면서 더욱 가치를 발휘하는 명품처럼, Etum Academy는 명품 중의 명품 학원임을 시간이 지나면서 더욱 깨닫게 됩니다. 사실은 그때 제가 친구들을 따라가고 싶은 학원이 있었는데 저의 고집을 꺾고 Etum Academy에 데려다 준 엄마의 판단 또한 옳았음을 깨닫고, 현명하신 저희 엄마에게도 감사하고 있습니다. Etum Academy에서 중,고등학교 시기를 알차게 보낸 덕분에 저는 오늘도 이 곳 Yale에서 저의 미래에 대한 자신감과 함께 열심히 공부하고 있습니다.

Letter from Harvard Graduate School
It was a great luck for me to have a chance to know Etum Academy, when I came to the US in ninth grade and faced great difficulties of learning English, which eventually led me to lose confidence in all subjects. Director Katherine restored my confidence through counseling, and she emphasized that, in order to communicate and cooperate more effectively and confidently with the intellectuals in my future career, I will need to aim higher and become conversant in more advanced level of English through constant reading. For this, Etum Book Club was a necessary process for me.
At first, it was difficult, but starting from the lowest level, I started reading books with persistence, and tried much harder than anybody else. Because of the well-structured booklets and the passionate teachers, my English skills began to improve day by day. Later on, I also took SAT classes since I felt that I was prepared enough. It was another challenge for me, however, since I had to do reading and writing of much more advanced level.
Yet, I loved the classes at Etum, first because they did not simply focus on giving problems and solving them, and because the teachers’ thorough preparation, in-depth lectures, and perfect student management contributed so much to the fast improvement in my vocabulary and writing skills. I was very busy during the school year, but it was absolutely worth coming to Etum Academy. I didn’t stop putting effort even after I got into UCLA, but continued to try my best and, to my surprise, I even received compliments on my writing from my English professor.
I could feel comfortable in reading, vocabulary, and writing, and I received straight A’s in college for four years. I was very happy last year when the dean of my college invited my parents to be present as I receive a scholarship for the best student of the department. This wasn’t the end of it – starting this year, I plan to study at Harvard Graduate School as a scholar. Things that I had only dreamed of a few years ago have come true, and a good first step I took at Etum Academy brought me here. Just like I have done so far, I would like to do my best at Harvard and be successful there as well. I will always be thankful to Etum Academy. Thank you so much once again.
9학년때 미국에 와서 영어라는 높은 벽을 만나고 모든 과목에서 자신감을 잃어갈 무렵 Etum Academy를 만난 것은 저에게 큰 행운이었습니다. Katherine 원장님은 상담을 통해서 저에게 자신감을 회복시켜 주셨고, 무엇보다 미국 사회에서 성공하기 위해서는 다른 학생을 따라가는 수준이 아닌 주류사회의 지식층과 겨룰 수 있는 고급 영어를 습득해야 하고 이를 위해서는 부단한 Reading이 필요함을 강조하셨죠. 이를 위해서 Etum Book Club은 저에게 꼭 필요한 과정이었습니다.
처음에는 힘들었지만 가장 낮은 Level부터 시작하여 누구보다 열심히 그리고 꾸준히 책을 읽기 시작했습니다. 체계적으로 잘 만들어진 교재와 열정적인 Etum 선생님들의 지도로 저의 영어 실력은 하루가 다르게 발전하고 있음을 느낄 수 있었습니다. 어느 정도 지나서 ‘이젠 할 수 있겠구나’ 하는 생각이 들어서 SAT Class도 수강 했었죠. 이건 저에게 또 다른 도전이었습니다. 더 수준 높은 Reading에다 이제는 Writing 까지 해야 했으니까요. 문제풀이식의 수업이 아니라서 좋았고, 무엇보다 선생님들의 철저한 수업준비와 깊이 있는 강의, 거기에다 완벽한 학생관리까지… 어느새 저의 Vocabulary와 Writing 실력이 훌쩍 자라났답니다. 학기중에는 무척 바빴지만 학원에 오는 시간이 하나도 아깝지 않았습니다. 결국 이러한 노력이 UCLA에 진학 한 다음에도 계속되었고 이윽고 저의 Writing은 교수님으로부터 과분한 칭찬까지 듣게 되었습니다.
Reading/Vocabulary와 Writing이 자리가 잡힌 까닭인지 대학 4년동안 전과목 A를 받게 되었고, 작년에 UCLA Best Student로 뽑혀 학장님이 부모님을 초대하여 장학금을 전달하셨을 때에는 너무 기뻤습니다. 여기가 끝이 아닙니다. 올해부터는 Harvard 대학원에서 장학생으로 공부하게 되었습니다. 몇년 전에는 꿈으로만 그리던 일들이 이제는 저에게 현실로 다가온 것입니다. Etum Academy에서 잘 끼운 단추 하나가 저를 여기에까지 오게 했습니다. 이제까지 했던 것처럼 Harvard에서도 열심히 해서 꼭 성공한 모습을 보여드리겠습니다. 그리고 제 마음속에서 Etum Academy에 대한 고마움은 영원히 지울 수 없을 것입니다. 다시 한번 깊이 감사드립니다.
